Doctoral Students

James Walliser
Picture
James Walliser is a third year doctoral student in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition Program working with Dr. Tyler Shaw. He is a Major in the United States Air Force with previous assignments as a human factors flight test engineer and later as an instructor at the United States Air Force Academy...

...James’ primary research interest is human-automation interaction. His other research is directed at understanding the way in which humans calibrate trust in multiple autonomous agents, whether they trust them all similarly or whether trust is attributed to each agent individually.

Ari Mandell
Picture
Ari Mandell is a fourth year doctoral student in George Mason University’s Human Factors & Applied Cognition program. In 2013, she earned a BA in Cognitive Science and Psychology from the University of Virginia, where she managed Dr. Salthouse’s Cognitive Aging Lab. Since 2013, Ari has worked with Dr. Tyler Shaw’s HeART lab, gaining experience with each of the lab’s facets: hemodynamics, automation, resilience, and trust.

Ari’s primary research interest is in the dynamics of trust in automation, but she is also interested in examining individual differences in vigilance performance (using Transcranial Doppler Sonography) and investigating effects of mind perception on human-robot interaction. She is currently researching the interaction between individual differences and automation design features (i.e. level of dominance) with a focus on the process of trust repair.

Spencer Kohn
Picture
Spencer Kohn is a third-year Human Factors and Applied Cognition graduate student in Dr. Shaw's HeART lab. Since joining the Mason community in 2014, Spencer has worked in the field of trust in automation in order to understand the factors that contribute towards building and repairing trust in multiple automation modalities. Currently, his work focuses on evaluating and repairing trust in autonomous vehicles.

Amanda Harwood
Picture
Amanda Harwood is currently working on her doctorate in Human Factors and Applied Cognition at George Mason University under Dr. Tyler Shaw and Dr. Patrick McKnight. During her undergraduate career, she received an internal grant to conduct her psychology honor’s thesis on the effects of first-person shooter video game training on fluid intelligence. She later received the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award at the university’s annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Amanda aims to measure, monitor, predict and improve human behavior through combining neuro-physiological measurement (i.e. transcranial doppler sonography) with cognitive training and brain stimulation. She hopes to continue her research to integrate neurological measures into real-time models of performance in order to predict future performance and prevent errors.

Raul Ramirez
Raul Ramirez is a  doctoral student in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition program at George Mason University. He received his Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Alabama in 2011. Raul is currently working with Dr. Tyler Shaw on projects focusing on vigilance, workload transitions, and the use of Transcranial Doppler Sonography to measure mental workload in humans.
